Millions of families who have never heard (nor care) about n4g, the SDF or updated games to work with that Sony thing that "looks like a Wii", will be having the time of their lives. Whatever helps get you through the day. If it's not an issue, they would've added it by now. The fact is they can't, not without compromising the quality of it. Just like the rest of PSN, it'll be tacked on, an afterthought, rather than an integrated part of the experience.

You can play online, you just can't play ranked matches. Not only that, but the addition of ESPN for gold members and a better, more stable integrated online service (i.e., it's not tacked on after the fact) has made and continues to keep XBL above and beyond PSN.
Psn is free because it has to be. No one would pay for it and you're going to see that with +.
